The City of Portsmouth is now accepting applications to fill two (2) Maintenance Custodian positions: One for 7:30am-3:30pm and one for 10pm-6am.
The purpose of this position is to maintain public buildings and grounds under his/her care in a safe, clean, sanitary, neat appearing, comfortable and fully functioning condition for use by its occupants. These objectives are accomplished by performing routine maintenance work in operating building mechanical and electrical systems; repairing other building systems such as doorways, windows, locking devices, pumps, and plumbing fixtures; refinishing ceiling, wall and floor surfaces; maintaining trees, shrubs, grass and other plants adjacent to assigned buildings and performing all types of custodial work responsive to the needs of building occupants, weather conditions and special building uses or features such as gyms, pools, auditoriums and related equipment. Performance is subject to review according to the City’s personnel plan through observation, reports and the results achieved.

Under broad supervision of designated supervisor, perform duties related to the design, installation, repair, maintenance, and operation of distribution systems for potable water, heating water supply, domestic hot water, chilled water, stormwater, wastewater, steam, and condensate. Inspect, maintain, and repair exterior utility distribution systems, stormwater treatment systems, sewage lift stations, underground utility tunnels, trenches and pits, and hydrant meter boxes for temporary water service to construction projects. Requires coordination with town public works staff, engineering consultants, Facilities Asset Management, and project managers. May make recommendations on equipment and repair budgets or maintain GIS databases and perform utility system mapping duties.
May need to respond to emergency situations and be on-call outside normal work hours.
Under general supervision of designated supervisor, perform the work requiring skill in the trade of HVAC for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of HVAC systems. Responsible for providing excellent customer service and producing the highest quality of work and services to multiple technical systems. Provide expertise in the HVAC field for troubleshooting complex issues applying trade knowledge exclusive to those with the highest level of HVAC experience. This position may perform duties related to chiller maintenance, complex dining refrigeration or highly restricted Research constant temperature control systems. All HVAC Mechanics are expected to act as department leaders to mentor apprentices and share specific knowledge with others in the field of HVAC maintenance.
UNH Facilities is a 24/7/365 operation and has responsibilities related to campus safety and emergency response. Due to the nature of our business, employees may be asked to flex schedules and/or respond to requests outside of normal working hours in order to meet the demands of the university. This may include early morning, evening, weekend, and holiday work as needed.
Under general supervision of designated supervisor, to install, maintain and repair heating and plumbing systems. Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing defective equipment, replacing or mending broken pipes, and opening clogged drains. Assembles pipe sections, tubing and fittings, using screws, bolts, solder, plastic solvent, and caulking. Cuts opening in structures to accommodate pipe and pipefittings, using hand and power tools. Locates and marks position of pipe installations and passage holes in structures, using measuring instruments such as ruler and level. Studies building plan and inspects structure to determine required materials and equipment and sequence of pipe installations. Installs pipe assemblies, fittings, valves, and fixtures such as sinks, toilets and tubs, using hand and power tools. Cuts threads, bends pipe to required angle, using pipe cutters, pipe-threading machine, and pipe-bending machine. Fills pipes or plumbing fixtures with water or air and observes pressure gauges to detect and locate leaks.
