Heating Service Technician

As a Heating Service Technician, you will be responsible for the day-to-day servicing of our customers. Your goal will be to troubleshoot and perform diagnostic activities regarding service equipment within our established policies and procedures.

Your Role:
Install, maintain, and troubleshoot oil and propane-fired boilers, furnaces, water heaters, and oil tanks
Troubleshoot and resolve problems that occur by reviewing diagnostics and using the proper tools to complete repairs
Provide final inspections of systems once repairs are completed to ensure all equipment is operating safely
Complete appropriate daily paperwork for each service call
Maintain daily and yearly inventory
Ensure the service truck is in good working order and reliable
Perform other duties as required to maintain and enhance departmental productivity
Rotational on call evenings and weekends

Your Skills:
Ability to work well with others; good organization and communication skills; attention to detail and strong customer service
Frequent driving, climbing in and out of vehicle and working in confined spaces. Heavy lifting and ability to work at heights ranging up to 50 ft
Ability to install various types of heating equipment
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with strict deadlines
Strong decision-making skills

Your Experience:
A valid Propane or natural gas license. Nora Certification is an asset
Knowledge of wiring and plumbing is required
Previous heating technician experience preferred

The work entails; Plans layout, installs, and or repairs electrical wiring installations, electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment. Key Duties include:

  • Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous and unreliable wiring, consistent with specifications and local codes.
  • Prepare sketches as necessary showing location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or blueprints, ensuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future containment.
  • Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit and associated wiring.
  • Connects wiring to fixtures and power equipment.
    Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels.
  • Connects power cables to equipment, such as motors, distribution equipment, and equipment, and installs grounding leads.
  • Tests continuity of circuit to assure electrical compatibility and safety of components with testing instruments.
  • Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement.
  • Repairs faulty equipment or systems.
  • Installation of electrical systems per the current version of the National and Massachusetts Electrical Code.
  • Follows all safe practices for installations as required by OSHA and NFPA
  • Insure safety of all employees, co-workers, and non-Elm employees on and off-site
  • Insure high quality workmanship and code/standards compliance.
  • Understand and maintain expected scope of work and intent on all projects.
  • Understand and comply with customer expectations as contract and/or costs allow.
  • Assist with tools, and all other operations as required.
  • Explain Elm procedures to all staff, assure understanding and compliance, and show benefits.
    Perform Sales and Marketing functions at all times (you represent Elm every minute).
  • Constantly be aware of other opportunities to assist client.
  • Think through and plan all operations for maximum efficiency. Do this in conjunction with all involved from conception of project to completion.
  • Assist in teaching all employees in increasing technical skills, codes, safety, and other skills necessary to perform their duties.
  • Assure accurate and timely reporting of time and materials on all jobs.
  • Attend all management and other meetings to assure excellent communications within the company, and to feedback customer satisfaction levels to management.
  • Share new methods and procedures with peers to better Elm, and to service clients better.
  • Follow all Health and Safety and other company policies

The Tree Service Crew Lead/Foreman is an additional level of specialty for select individuals who have demonstrated leadership qualities and received approval from local branch management to provide direction in a work crew setting.  Specific knowledge includes: TCIA Crew Leader Training Program, Crew Safety, Personal Safety, Hazard of Inexperience, and ability to check off levels equal and below.

This position pays up to $35 an hr depending on experience + paid PTO + paid benefits, 401K.

What a day is like:

Daily focus is working together on a General Tree Care crew to provide high quality tree care to our clients. The Tree Care Team is involved in all aspects of pruning, removals, cable bracing and other concepts related to tree care. Team members are able to safely operate all equipment and perform the assigned job tasks while also providing excellent service to our clients.

What kind of person are we looking for?  Someone with:

Experience with proper pruning practices including large shade trees and ornamentals
Ability to identify native and introduced tree and shrub species and have a working knowledge of each species’ characteristics
Ability to climb without spurs
Experience with tree care safety standards
Practical knowledge of chainsaw and equipment operation
Experience with aerial lifts (bucket truck)
Communicate advanced understanding of all safety policies and procedures, including hazard tree identification.
Utilize specialized equipment properly for climbing (ropes, saddle, ladders) along with all associated tools.
Apply knowledge of branch collars, and proper pruning cuts with total competence on chainsaw operations.
Employ ANSI A300 Pruning Standards and Terminology and ANSI Z Safety
What is Essential:

2 – 5 years of tree care/tree climbing experience
Leadership experience in directing and guiding a tree care team on daily routines and activities
The desire to work outdoors
Valid U.S. driver’s license to operate company vehicles, CDL A&B a plus or willingness to obtain
Must be authorized to work lawfully in the U.S.
